Why does my dog lick me?

Have you ever sat and wondered what its like being a dog? Most dogs are instinctively happy. In domestic dogs, licking is a sign of affection. When dogs lick, their bodies they release endorphins. Endorphins give a dog a feeling of nurture and comfort.

If your dog is anything like mine, the highlight of his day seems to be when I arrive home. He rushes to the door, wagging his tail, jumps on my leg and greets me with lots of wet licks.

These wet licks mean exactly what you’ve probably been thinking they mean, that your dog loves you. A dog cannot communicate with words or hand signals. When he licks you, this is him saying “hello,  “I missed you”, “I love you”.

Licking, can also show submission in a dog. It’s a way he shows respect. You are his master, and he respects you, and he wants you to know it!

A dog’s natural instinct is to lick, it starts when they are newborn puppies. The mama dog licks her babies clean shortly after birth. She licks them to help urinate and eliminate waste. Have you ever watched a litter of puppies? The dominant puppies get licked by the smaller, or more submissive puppies. Dogs are pack animals and therefore each has a job in the pack. Some are dominant and some are submissive.

Dogs love their owners smell and the taste of their salty skin. So just remember the next time your dog comes to greet you with a nice wet lick, hes just saying ” I love you”, you should tell him you love him too.
